Learn moreWhat is standard stainless steel used for?
Thanks to its corrosion resistance, standard stainless steel can be used not only indoors but also outdoors. Due to the good formability of stainless steel sheets, it is also becoming increasingly widespread in industry, households and medical equipment. In addition to hygiene aspects, the durability of parts produced with stainless steel is also a decisive factor for the wide range of possible applications in various branches, such as:
- Food and beverage industry
- Pharmaceuticals and medical engineering
- Water management
- Automotive and machinery construction
- Furniture sector
- Construction industry and architecture

What are the properties of stainless steel?
The basic properties of stainless steels include:
- High ductility
- High corrosion resistance
- Low thermal conductivity properties
- Low electrical conductivity
However, the properties of the metal vary depending on the steel structure.
Austenitic stainless steel
This is the most common stainless steel. It is non-magnetic in a stress-free state, exhibits high ductility and a relatively high tensile strength. The addition of molybdenum also makes this steel resistant to acid. Austenitic steel exhibits excellent formability and is easy to weld, but cannot be hardened by quenching and tempering; this can however be achieved by cold forming. Due to their high toughness, these steels are usually difficult to machine.
Austenitic-ferritic stainless steel (duplex stainless steel)
Duplex stainless steel is one of the most rust and acid-resistant steels. It possesses high strength and toughness values and, depending on the grade, is also resistant to seawater. Duplex stainless steels are also easy to weld.
Ferritic stainless steel
Stainless steels without the addition of nickel form a ferritic structure. Ferritic steel is strongly magnetic and exhibits high thermal conductivity. It is also corrosion-inert or corrosion-resistant, depending on the chromium content. Unlike austenitic steel, it is less elastic and less weldable.
Martensitic stainless steel
Depending on the carbon content, this stainless steel is also magnetic. It can be hardened through heat treatment and can reach high hardness values depending on its composition. Martensitic steel is also resistant to corrosion, although its increased carbon content makes this property less distinct than in other grades of steel. Welding is only possible to a very limited extent.
What is standard stainless steel made of?
Stainless steel consists of an iron-carbon alloy with at least 10.5% chromium and less than 1.2% carbon, whereby the high chromium content is responsible for the corrosion resistance. It forms a self-restoring passive layer of chromium oxide on the surface of the material, which protects the steel from oxidation.
By adding further alloying components, such as nickel, copper, molybdenum, manganese or niobium, it is possible to influence the corrosion resistance and the mechanical properties. Increasing the copper content, for example, ensures improved acid resistance. A higher nickel content increases the notched impact strength.
